The Sixth Amendment

The Bill of Rights to the United States Constitution includes four amendments that protect you during the criminal process. These are the fourth amendment, fifth amendment, sixth amendment, and eighth amendment. The fourth amendment pertains to illegal search and seizure. The fifth amendment includes your immediate rights and leads to the Miranda rights. The eighth amendment keeps your bail from being excessive and disallows cruel and unusual punishment. Your sixth amendment rights deal with your trial.

During your trial, the sixth amendment becomes the most important. It states:

In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the State and district where in the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the Assistance of Counsel for his defense.

This means that your trial cannot be put off or extended for unreasonably long periods of time. It also guarantees that you get a trial by an impartial jury. Possibly the most important aspect of this amendment, however, is your right to the assistance of counsel. This means that you have the right to an attorney.
