The Booking Process

If you have ever watched a crime drama on TV or know someone who has been charged with committing a criminal act, then you may be familiar with the booking process. This is an early step in the arrest procedure. During the booking process, all of the suspect’s information is collected and submitted into the jail and court systems.

Steps in the Booking Process

Booking occurs after the suspect has been arrested and brought into the local holding center or jail. This process essentially encompasses all collection of information on the suspect. There are several steps to booking:

  • Collection of personal information. This typically includes answering a number of questions regarding your name, address, social security number, phone number, driver’s license number, and other pertinent information.
  • Taking photos (mug shots). Several photographs will be taken to document the suspect’s physical appearance at the time of the arrest.
  • Search and confiscation of personal property. For those who will stay in the jail, a strip search may be performed to ensure that they do not have any contraband items on their person.
  • Fingerprinting. Either ink or laser processes will be used to record the suspect’s fingerprints.

Following the booking process, a suspect may be required to stay in the jail. In certain cases, however, suspects may be able to post bail immediately and will therefore be released after booking has been completed.
