Polygamy in the United States
Polygamy is the act of having more than one spouse. In years past, the United States has had problems with polygamy. A few Mormon communities have practiced polygamy for many years and as far back as the mid-19th century, U.S. politicians were trying to ban the practice of polygamy.
However, the success they achieve was only limited. They did pass laws making polygamy illegal. As the Mormon community grew, so did the practice of polygamy among certain groups of Mormons, though only in secret. Recently in the United States, in the year 2008, a Mormon sect’s compound was raided in Texas and polygamy was discovered along with child marriage. Clearly, polygamy is still a touchy subject in the United States, 150 years later after polygamy started gaining increasing attention.
Some people have pointed out the hypocrisy of the anti-polygamy laws. Laws do not prevent people from having sexual relations with multiple people at once. They do not prevent people from marrying and divorcing any number of times. So why should consenting adults be prevented from being married to multiple people? To some, it seems unfair.
Only a few people, though, believe that people should be allowed to have multiple spouses. As a result, it is illegal for people to have more than one spouse at once.
