Petty Theft vs. Grand Theft

Although it may not be common knowledge, there are actually several different types of theft. Or, rather, crimes of theft can be broken down into two different levels of severity: petty theft and grand theft. Because the consequences of grand theft are so much more severe than petty theft, it's important to know the differences between the two and the consequences you face if you are charged with theft.

If you or someone you love is being prosecuted for theft of any kind, it is important to have an experienced criminal defense attorney on your side. Contact the Denton criminal lawyers of Alexander & Associates by calling 972-420-6560 to learn more about how we can help you.

Defining Petty Theft and Grand Theft

The difference between petty theft and grand theft is primarily in the value of the property taken. Although the threshold that separates petty and grand theft differs from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, it is usually between $200 and $1000, with the national average falling around the $400 mark. So, for example, if you were to steal a television valued at $200, the crime would likely be considered petty theft. However, if you were to steal a television valued at $500, you may have committed grand theft.

Naturally, there is also a difference in the way these crimes are punished. Petty theft is considered a misdemeanor, and is punishable by a fine or up to six months in jail. Grand theft, however, may be considered either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the circumstances, and is punishable by a year or more in state prison.
