Dog Fighting
The United States has no tolerance for dog fighting. Every state, as well as Washington, DC, has statutes that have made dog fighting illegal. Dog fighting is a cruel, vicious, bloody activity that pits two dogs against each other to fight to the near-death. Dog fights usually last from 1 to 2 hours, so dogs become very bruised and injured. Dogs that lose in fights are usually so injured that they cannot fight again. As a result, they are killed.
Dog fights do not only involve dogs fighting one another, however. Because dog fights themselves are illegal and have to take place in secret, they attract other illegal activities as well. One of the major illegal activities that follow dog fighting is gambling. Unsurprisingly, spectators often bet on which dog will win. Additionally, arms deals and gang violence also often follow dog fights, as the crowds that attend dog fights are prone to illegal activities.
In most states, dog fighting is a felony. People who are charged with dog fighting face several years in prison. In addition, they may have to pay large fines. They may even have to perform community service. Finally, and unsurprisingly, they will probably be legally barred from being allowed to “own” any other animals.
Although dog fighting is illegal everywhere in the United States, unfortunately it still continues. Fortunately, though, law enforcement usually takes the appropriate measures to enforce dog fighting laws.
